Several forms of the double-sided grinding machine processing method

1. Dry Grinding: During dry grinding, only a small amount of lubricant additive needs to be applied to the surface of the grinding tool. The abrasive grains remain largely fixed on the tool throughout the process, and their cutting action is primarily achieved through sliding abrasion. While this method isn’t highly productive, it can deliver exceptionally high machining accuracy and produce surfaces with very low roughness values (Ra 0.02–0.01 μm).

2. Wet Grinding: During the grinding process, the abrasive is applied onto the lap, and grinding is performed using dispersed abrasive grains. In addition to the abrasive grains, the grinding compound typically contains substances such as kerosene, machine oil, oleic acid, and stearic acid. As the grinding progresses, some of the abrasive grains become trapped between the lap and the workpiece, as shown in Figure 8-12b. At this stage, grinding primarily occurs through rolling action, resulting in high material removal rates and achieving surface roughness values as low as Ra0.04 to 0.02 μm. This method is generally used for rough machining, though the finished surfaces usually lack a glossy finish.

3. Soft Abrasive Grinding
During the grinding process, an abrasive made from chromium oxide is applied to the working surface of the lap. Since the abrasive material is softer than both the lap and the workpiece, it remains suspended between them throughout the process. The primary mechanism relies on the chemical interaction between the abrasive and the workpiece surface, forming a very thin layer of oxide film. This film is particularly easy to remove at protruding areas, where the abrasive effectively wears it away.

Process of Processing Stainless Steel with a Surface Lapping and Polishing Machine

Stainless steel, renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance, superior mechanical properties, ease of machining with surface grinding and polishing equipment, and outstanding weldability, has become a widely preferred engineering material. Moreover, by employing various polishing techniques, it’s possible to achieve surfaces of differing grades on stainless steel sheets, tubes, bars, and profiled materials, significantly enhancing their aesthetic appeal and enabling them to meet high design standards. For different metal materials, diverse application scenarios, and varying surface requirements of metal components, it’s essential to select the appropriate grinding method—or even combine several techniques—to ensure that the finished parts fully satisfy the demands of their intended use.
